Square footage matters less than people expect. What really moves the number is access, whether a machine can reach the work or every stone goes through a side gate by hand, how much excavation and base the site needs, and the stone you choose.

Rather than handing you a menu of prices, we come out and talk it through properly. You tell us what you want out of the space and roughly what you want to spend, and we tell you honestly what scope fits that. Sometimes that means a smaller patio in better stone, sometimes it means phasing the wall and the patio across two seasons. That conversation is free and it is usually worth having before you have picked anything.

Quite a lot, and most of it comes from close to home. We have long standing relationships with a number of local quarries, and we carry an extensive inventory of Montana natural stone: boulders, dry stack and wall rock, natural flagstone, steppers and slabs, plus a full range of pavers.

Using local rock is not just a supply thing. Stone quarried around here looks like it belongs in a Montana yard, weathers the way the rest of the landscape weathers, and does not sit in the yard looking imported. If you have something specific in mind, or something already on the property you want to build around, mention it when we walk the site and we will bring options.

Water and frost, almost every time. Water gets into the base, freezes, expands and lifts everything sitting on top of it. A wall that was not drained behind is holding back saturated soil that gets heavier every spring until something gives.

Neither of those is a stone problem, it is a base and drainage problem. That is why so much of what you are paying for is the part you will never see again once the job is done, and it is the last place we would cut to hit a number.

Some do. It depends on how tall the wall is, what it is holding back, whether there is a driveway or a structure sitting above it, and which jurisdiction you are in. We will tell you whether yours needs it before we bid the work rather than after we have started.

When it does, that is not a problem or a delay. We can have our design plans stamped by a licensed architect or engineer, and we have done it plenty of times over the years. It is a normal part of building a wall properly, and we handle the coordination.

Usually, and honestly it is often the reason the project is worth doing at all. If water is running toward the house, pooling in the middle of the yard or quietly undermining a wall somebody else built, hardscape is the natural moment to deal with it, because the ground is already open.

Solving it during the build costs a fraction of what it costs to come back later and lift a finished patio to get at it.

It depends on the scope, and you get a real schedule with the estimate rather than a guess over the phone. What we will commit to is this: we do not start your project and then vanish to another job site for two weeks. When our crew starts your build, they stay on it until it is finished.

Earlier than feels necessary. Stone work is weather bound in Montana and the build calendar fills from the front, so the projects that get the dates they want are the ones estimated over the winter and into early spring. Getting an estimate does not commit you to a start date, it just keeps one available.

We do, and most hardscape projects here include some. We are a full service landscape company that builds stone work, not a masonry crew, so the beds, trees, sod and irrigation can all sit in the same estimate and be done by the same people rather than a second contractor you have to schedule around.
